What is Endoscopy?
Endoscopy is the examination and inspection of the interior of body organs, joints or cavities
through an endoscope. An endoscope is a device that uses fiber optics and powerful lens
systems to provide lighting and visualization of certain passage ways and organs of the body.
The portion of the endoscope inserted into the body may be rigid or flexible, depending upon
the medical procedure. Endoscopy can be used to diagnose various conditions by close
examination of internal organ and body structures. A biopsy may also be performed under
endoscopic guidance. Local or general anesthetic may be used during endoscopy, depending
upon the type of procedure being performed.
